The lemonade stand is the teaching tool used by 37 Leadership Walton students as they help kids in Northwest Arkansas learn what it means to be entrepreneurs.

The students from the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas are working with students in grades 3-8 as a part of Lemonade Day.

Lemonade Day is an experiential program that teaches youngsters around the country and in Africa to start, own and operate their own business – a lemonade stand – during a community-wide Lemonade Day. The program teaches key analytical skills, financial literacy and decision making and fosters self-esteem.  The Northwest Arkansas Chapter of Lemonade Day is organized by Big Brothers Big Sisters of NWA.

The Leadership Walton students divided into teams and in April traveled to schools in Fayetteville, West Fork, Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville and Gentry to teach youngsters about product development, pitching the investor, marketing, stand location and budgeting. Rita Littrell, director of the Bessie B. Moore Center for Economic Education, helped the Leadership Walton students learn to teach those concepts.

To cap their project, the young Northwest Arkansas students will operate stands throughout the area on May 6, including the Fayetteville Farmer’s Market.
